Suspect leads police on deadly high-speed chase

Globe — On Monday, April 11 at about 8:30 p.m., officers from the Globe Police Department began investigating a reported domestic violence assault that occurred at the Gila County Fairgrounds located within the Globe city limits. The suspect, Jaeden Matthew Spurgeon, 18, of Globe reportedly assaulted his girlfriend and left with her vehicle.

At about 9:40 p.m., Globe Police Officers located Spurgeon and his vehicle near Dave’s Fast Stop in Globe. As Globe officers approached the suspect vehicle, Spurgeon accelerated toward an officer, who had to jump out of the way of the vehicle as it sped past him. Officers quickly initiated a pursuit of the vehicle.

During the pursuit, the suspect drove at speeds in excess of 90 MPH. Globe Police officers knew the identity of the suspect and the pursuit was terminated as they approached downtown Miami. Both Miami and Superior Police Departments became involved in the pursuit, however, they terminated the pursuit in Superior.

At about 10:07 p.m., the Globe Police Department was notified that Spurgeon had caused a head-on collision at milepost 216 on eastbound Highway 60. Officers from the Globe Police Department responded to the Highway 60 scene to assist the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) with their investigation of the fatal accident.

 Globe Police Department will file charges of: kidnapping, aggravated assault on a peace officer, unlawful flight from a peace officer, domestic violence/assault, domestic violence/threats and unlawful use of means of transportation.
