Superfan: Q & A with local athletes

Esperanza Newman, “aka ESPN,” is a junior who has played softball “for a long time,” ever since she was small. “I’m die-hard in love with this sport.” She has pitched and played second base. “I love infield.” Her favorite subject is math, but she does not know what subject she will major in after going to one of the local two-year colleges. During her high school career, she has gone out for volleyball, basketball and cross-country, but she didn’t like cross-country. She likes San Carlos because of the views of Triplets and the other mountains.

Samantha Gonzales is a sophomore at Miami who is a softball player through and through. She has played for eight years and it is her only sport, which she plays year-round on various teams including the Firecrackers out of Union Hills. She is a starting shortstop on the Miami team. One of her favorite sports memories is of when her team came together after closing out their 11-0 winning season last year. Math is a favorite subject since it is easy for her, especially algebra II. She appreciates the teachers at the high school offering life skills and values to students in addition to ordinary school subjects. After graduation she wants to attend college and play college softball.

Senior Hope Bear plays third base for Globe. Although she also plays first, Bear prefers third because it is the “hot corner,” and a third baseman needs to have fast reflexes and she “needs to know what to do with the ball in different circumstances.” She has played softball for 10 years. She also plays volleyball, but she prefers softball. One of her favorite sports memories is of her freshman year when she was called to play on the varsity softball team. She likes Globe High School for the number of electives it offers, and her favorite subject is economics. After graduation, she plans to go to college to pursue a carrier in sports training and medicine.
