Spring break, weather disrupt local baseball schedule

Vandals baseball

Between the wet weather and spring break for the local high schools, Globe had a week to rest, while the Miami Vandals rode a hot hand, sweeping two tough rivals in Tucson.

The Vandals had challenges with wet fields during the school’s spring break. With three games on the schedule, things did not look promising, as a home game against Morenci scheduled for March 14 was rained out.

According to Miami Coach Brandon Powell, the game will be rescheduled in April.

It looked as if a home game against Tucson’s St. Augustine was going to have to be rescheduled as well, but in a show of dedication to their sport, the Vandal baseballers made a trip to Tucson to pull an unusual doubleheader, first at St. Augustine at 2 p.m. and then at San Miguel at 6 p.m.

“I was worried about St. Augustine and San Miguel, but as young as we are, we still have the pitching,” Powell said.

Powell had nothing to worry about, as the young Vandals beat St. Augustine in eight innings by a score of 5-4 and then beat San Miguel 11-1.

The Vandals travel to San Carlos on Tuesday, March 19 (after press time) and return home for a game with Thatcher on at 4 p.m. on March 14.

According to Maxpreps, Miami is second behind San Manuel (6-2) in the 2A South standings with a record of 5-5.

Globe baseball

It was a light week for the Tigers, as spring break disrupted the schedule for Globe.

The week gave the Tigers’ tired arms a rest, but this week Globe will play two games in quick succession.

A home game against Santa Rita took place on Tuesday, March 19 (after press time) and an away game in Hayden on Wednesday, March 20 at 4 p.m. rounds out the week.

The Tigers take to the diamond next on Monday, March 25 with a home game against Willcox, followed on Tuesday, March 26 with another home tilt against San Manuel.

On Friday, March 29 there will be a game in San Carlos against the Braves at 4 p.m.

As of Monday, March 18, Globe is winless for the season and, according to Maxpreps is in seventh place in the 2A South standings in front of Santa Rita, which is 0-4.
