On Friday, Jan. 2 the Miami Vandals hosted the San Manuel Miners for the team’s Senior night. The Vandals boys’ basketball team has five seniors. Coach Vargas said, “They better win. All the seniors are getting the start tonight. So again, they better win.” It was a bold statement by Coach Vargas. It’s a testament to the high standards that have become part of Miami High School sports. The expectation is to win any game, against any opponent.

Unfortunately, the Vandals came up a bit short against the Miners. The game was close, but San Manuel was able to hold on and best Miami 43 to 41.

The Vandals top two scorers are only sophomores this year. That means that they did not get much playing time in this game. It was Senior night for Miami and Coach Vargas chose to honor his seniors with the playing time they deserve. They may have come up two points short of a win, but these boys played hard together. It shows a lot of character by Kenny Vargas to give his seniors this night. He wanted the win, but it seems he wanted his players to have that experience together even more. I am sure that these five seniors will never forget the game that they battled together.
