Posted

San Carlos had their hands full with 3A Safford.

The Lady Braves started strong, scoring nine points before Safford caught up and tied the game. San Carlos built up their lead to five, but the Bulldogs chewed it down to two by the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, San Carlos fell behind by three before running their lead up to four. They finished the half only one up.

In the third quarter, the Braves’ lead varied from 11 to one.

The score was 45-46 at the beginning of quarter four. They then bobbled around one behind, tied or one behind until Alyssa Martin and Cheridan Gooday took charge putting San Carlos eight ahead in the final three minutes.

Martin drew two fouls, making the free throws and one 2-point basket to bring the score from 54-54 to 54-60. Gooday’s points put the Braves eight ahead. From there to the end of the game, the Braves held onto the lead. The score showed a San Carlos win 70-65.

The point leader was Beyonce Cutter with 30 points. Allyssa Martin only scored 20 points, but four of them were crucially in the fourth quarter.

Gooday made 13 points and Heaven Cosen made 12. Aaliyah Haozous made 11 points. No Lady Brave in the game scored less than two points.

Although they had more of a spread in scoring in their game last week, they showed that they have the depth to match Globe, who will be their opponent on Friday, Feb. 1 at home. There will be two challenging games.

The Varsity girls and the JV boys aim to win on that Friday.

Aaliyah Haozous gets her shot blocked.
