Felicio Ramos won a match against Alchesay on Jan. 29 in the San Carlos gym, but San Carlos did not win the event because they had only four wrestlers. Pima, Hayden and Alchesay had bigger teams. Jeremiah Ailak almost won an Alchesay match, controlling his opponent in the final minutes but not pinning him, and losing on points lost in the first minutes.
Trevan Alverado gained valuable experience as did Heaven Bullis who competed against a more powerful boy her weight class. Coach Benal Benally was hopeful for the chances of Kenya Star at state after she took second place at the girls’ sectional on Saturday Feb. 1 in Fountain Hills. The state tournament will be held on the weekend of Feb. 14-15.
