Derryck Courvoisier, who has been learning soccer since the age of 12, used his leadership skills to save the Miami soccer season. It had been cancelled twice because of a dearth of academically or medically qualified players. His solution, which he sold to players and administrators, was to field a co-ed team. The unified Miami team will compete against boys’ teams. His favorite subjects are accounting and history with Mr. Lineberry. His other sports are archery, which he learned with his family since the age of 4 or 5, and football, which he abandoned after a knee injury made him fear further injury and interfere with soccer scholarships possibly in the offing. His favorite soccer teams are Manchester United in the UK and Dortmund in Germany. He records games and watches them to improve his skills. He already has welding certifications from Gila Pueblo, but his career goals involve criminal justice or dermatology.
