Miami Library thankful for a successful event

The Friends of the Miami Memorial Library would like to offer their sincere gratitude to everyone who participated in the “Dessert with Elvis” fundraiser Saturday, Feb. 9.

The event was a wonderful success with the funds meeting the goal of purchasing much needed media cabinets for the library.

First and foremost, the Friends wish to thank the talented Mr. Gus Park for his entertaining “Tribute to Elvis” show that delighted the large crowd.

Tasty barbecue sliders from Joe’s Ribs added to the array of desserts and drinks provided by the many Friends of the library.

Four beautiful baskets were raffled off during the event. Raffle baskets were filled with the generous donations from Soda Pops, Pinal Mountain Flowers, My Mom’s DZynes, Hill Street Mall, Simply Sarah, Jen’s Jelly, Turn the Page Western Wear and Laura Pontel. The raffle winners were Pam Wenger, Paul Hendricks, Rosemary Gonzales and Cuco Falquez.

Tuesday Book Club shakes things up with ‘Elvis’

The Tuesday Book Club has existed in Globe for more than 70 years, but at their first meeting of 2019, held on Jan. 8, it was not book club business as usual.

Mary Testa, a member for the past two years, was scheduled to review her chosen book, “Being Elvis: A Lonely Life,” by Ray Connolly. Knowing the King of Rock was born on Jan. 8, 1935, she decided to shake things up with a surprise party.

Shortly after current events, in walks Gus Park, an Elvis tribute artist, wearing a bejeweled white suit and long dark sideburns. He serenaded the room of women, aged mid-50s to early 90s, who swayed and sang along, and shared memories. Member Carol DeNino saw Elvis live in concert twice and still has one of the scarves he gave away.

Park has been singing Elvis songs for 17 years, and over time, became a fan himself. After sharing his story and songs, he headed down the road, with his “roadie” Red Carlson, to do another gig down in the Valley.

Then Testa proceeded to share some highlights from the book and impressions it made on her.

The group had a belated holiday gift exchange, and the meeting concluded with coffee and dessert, as it does two Tuesdays a month, all year long.
