The Miami Vandals, coached by Brandon Powell, opened their 2019 football season by knocking off the Scottsdale Christian Academy Eagles 40-28 Friday, Aug. 30, 2019 at Miami High School.
Vandal game Captains included: #8 senior Jaden Goss, #11 junior Ryan Powell, #44 senior Brian Goss, and #72 junior Skyler Guerrero.
The Vandals struggled on their first possession, calling a timeout at the 10:23 mark, followed by a fourth and 15 punt attempt from their own endzone. The Eagles smothered punter Ryan Powell in the endzone to take a 2-0 lead.
With 6:21 to play in the opening quarter, Scottsdale scored on a 23 yard run. The 2-point conversion pass attempt fell incomplete, leaving the score Eagles 8, Vandals 0.
The Eagle kickoff was returned to the Vandals 24 yard line by #5 Gabe Escobedo.
Three plays into the Miami possession, Ryan Powell gained 17 yards on a quarterback keeper to the Vandal 40 yard line. On the next play, Powell completed a deep pass to Escobedo who went 60 yards for a Vandal touchdown with 5:08 to play in the first quarter. Senior #2 Michael Troglia punched in the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 8 – 8.
Scottsdale gained 10 yards on first down, however the Vandal defense swarmed the Eagle quarterback for an 18 yard loss on the next play. Two plays later, on fourth and 15, an incomplete pass turned the ball over to Miami on downs at the Vandal 34 yard line.
Miami drove 66 yards to score on a five yard touchdown run by Escobedo with 11:12 to play in the first half. The 2-point conversion failed, leaving the score Miami 14, Scottsdale 8.
The Eagles scored on an eight yard run at the 7:02 mark in the second quarter. The extra point made the score Scottsdale 15, Miami 14.
On the Vandals next possession, Powell completed a 47 yard touchdown pass to Escobedo with :49 seconds left in the half. The 2-point conversion failed, setting the score at Miami 20, Scottsdale 15 at the half.
In the third quarter, Powell completed a 10 yard touchdown pass to #10 senior Brady Bartholomew at the 6:41 mark. The 2-point conversion pass attempt fell incomplete, leaving the score Miami 26, Scottsdale 15.
The Eagles marched 60 yards in to score on an 11 yard touchdown run with 2:00 minutes to play in the third quarter. Escobedo blocked the Scottsdale extra point attempt, leaving the score Miami 26, Scottsdale 21.
With 11:35 to play in the game, Powell threw a 50 yard touchdown pass to Jaden Goss. The 2-point conversion failed, leaving the score at Miami 32, Scottsdale 21.
With 7:16 left to play, #21 sophomore Justin Cook went 21 yards for a touchdown. Cook also ran in the 2-point conversion to set the final score: Miami Vandals 40, Scottsdale Christian 21.
The 1-0 Vandal travel to Valley in Sanders, Arizona next week with the kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
