Miami sewer rate increase hearing July 22

Posted

Miami residents will have a chance July 22 to speak their minds on a proposed sewer rate increase.

The public hearing will be held during the council meeting, set to begin at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 22, in council chambers, 500 W. Sullivan St., in Miami.

Those who wish to comment on the proposed increase may do so either in person at the public hearing or in writing prior to the hearing.

At its May 13 regular meeting, the Miami Town Council voted to direct staff to publish a notice of intent that the town planned to increase the sewer rates. Councilman Angel Medina had an excused absence.

Prior to the vote, Utility Coordinator Tashlana Jerrols explained that it will be a 2.3 percent rate increase, which is part of the USDA loan agreement.

The proposed fees and changes are based on a study completed by Economists.com, she said.

Former Councilwoman Rosemary Castaneda, who was in the audience, explained that the rate increase was necessary to qualify for the USDA loan for the sewer project — that the agency would have confidence the town could pay it back.

The proposed sewer rates are as follows:

Residential

Current base charge, $26.01; Proposed, $26.53

Usage charge per 2,500 gallons, $18.25; Proposed, $18.75

Commercial N

Current base charge, $13.51; Proposed, $13.78

Usage charge per 2,500 gallons, $9.13; Proposed, $9.31

Commercial Z

Current base charge, $26.01; Proposed, $26.53

Usage charge per 2,500 gallons, $17.56; Proposed, $17.91

Commercial C

Current base charge, $26.01; Proposed, $26.53

Usage charge per 2,500 gallons, $21.83; Proposed, $22.26

Commercial R

Current base charge, $26.01; Proposed, $26.53

Usage charge per 2,500 gallons, $17.56; Proposed $17.91

The proposed rates would become effective 30 days after council approval. The vote is scheduled for the July 22 meeting.

Members of the public may see a copy of the written report supporting the increases during normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, at the Office of Town Clerk, 500 W. Sullivan St., Miami.
