MHS Wrestlers have shorter season, more dedication

The Miami wrestlers have had their share of changes this year. One change involves Tony Grainger, who has assisted in the past, replacing Andre Blake as head coach. Assisting Grainger this season is Daniel Gutierrez. The team consists of seniors Luiz Romero, Skylar Guerrero and Ryan Tidey; juniors Diego Pena and Stratton Palmer; sophomores Larenz Combs, Gabriel Cabrera and Daniel Gutierrez; and freshmen Austin Rubin, Cameron Mabbit and Aden Wood.

Wrestlers spend hours on the mats training and use competition meets to perfect their techniques. The number of meets for competition have been cut by more than half of a usual season due to the pandemic. Many schools across Arizona are not participating in winter sports and as a result the schools’ usual lineup changed. MHS wrestlers haven’t let all the changes shift their focus. The team looks smaller this year but the dedication and commitment by the athletes makes up the difference. This year they have three seniors; all have wrestled their entire high school years, some even in Jr. high school. Each one said they would like to make it to state and just improve from last year. Ryan Tidey hasn’t had the chance to compete at state due to injuries each year but remains hopeful to change that.
