Mayor Gameros updates public on mask ordinance

GLOBE –– At the City of Globe’s regular council meeting held on July 14, Mayor Al Gameros provided a brief update to the council about the effectiveness of the City’s face coverings proclamation.

“On June 22, I signed a proclamation that mandates masks be worn in public spaces. I have noticed that more people are wearing masks,” said Gameros.

“We are around 80 to 90 percent now. We still have those pockets that are not wearing the masks. I commend code enforcement’s Michelle Yerkovich for going out to businesses to reinforce this proclamation. We should be wearing masks in small businesses as well as large businesses. We have to comply with what we are learning from our health officials, from science, and from data that is telling us that wearing a mask will stop the spread of the virus.”

The mayor noted that Globe-Miami has been averaging around two positive cases a day.

“We are doing pretty well as far as Globe-Miami and Claypool are concerned. San Carlos continues to see a spike and Payson has seen a high spike in the last couple of weeks.”

The City’s plan is to promote the Mask-Up initiative with banners and increase the City’s advertisement and education in order to get more people to comply.

“If people are coming from out of town they need to wear a mask if they are going to have contact in our community,” said Gameros.

“Let’s slow this down so that we don’t have to shut down our restaurants and businesses with another stay at home order.”
