Magma smelter stack scheduled to be demolished Nov. 10

Posted

Controlled demolition of the Magma Copper smelter complex is the latest phase in Resolution Copper’s reclamation project at our West Plant site that began in 2005. All smelter buildings have been safely demolished and cleanup of contaminated waste materials is ongoing. A target date of Saturday, Nov. 10, has been set for controlled demolition of the chimney stack.

Optimal weather conditions are required for the team of demolition experts to execute the plan, so postponement due to unfavorable wind or other weather factors is a possibility. Technical considerations also could postpone the operation. If all requirements are met on Nov. 10, stack demolition will be carried out between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. Any delays will be announced via social media and on ResolutionCopper.com.

If demolition is postponed due to weather or other factors, the operation will be rescheduled for the next day during the same timeframe until all conditions are ideal and it can be safely carried out.

Safety is our highest priority. Mine property boundaries will be strictly enforced to ensure safe execution of the demolition operation.

We are coordinating with the Town of Superior to facilitate public viewing of the stack demolition. The Town is finalizing plans for closing off a section of Main Street along the Resolution Copper property boundary to vehicle traffic to allow residents to view the operation from a safe location that also provides a good vantage point. In the coming days, we will share details on the Town’s closure of Main Street for public viewing.

We will record video of the stack demolition and make a clip available on our website and social media channels.
