Lon Jay Thompson of Carlin, NV, passed away in his home on August 9, 2017 after a painful battle with cancer.

Lon was born to Lyle and Mina Thompson in Flagstaff, Az on June 8, 1956. They soon moved to San Carlos, Ariz where his mother taught elementary school. His father began teaching at Globe High School and they later relocated to Globe where Lon grew up and attended school, graduating on the Honor Roll in 1974.

In 1972 his parents purchased the Polar Ice Plant. Lon, along with his siblings; Dean, Bart, and Lori, spent their free time working in the ice business.

Lon also worked summers while attending college at Eastern Arizona Jr. College in Thatcher, Ariz. He graduated in 1976.

Lon spent the next 38 years in the mining industry in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Nevada.

In 1980 he married Sherry Buchanan, who he met while working for her dad, Joe and her brother in NM. Joe said he was the best Cryderman Operator he had ever seen.

Sherry fell in love and with her dad’s blessing they married and raised five children.

After years of being apart, Lon and Sherry found their way into each others lives again, not only as husband and wife, but mother and father, and papa and nana.

Lon cared for her for the last year of her life, giving her what she needed, love and companionship. They remarried on February 8, 2016.

Lon is survived by his dad Lyle, mother Mina, brother Bart, sister Lori, children Jill (Terry), David (Amanda), Ben, Katie (Andy), daughter-in-law Erica, and 7 grandchildren.

He is proceeded in death by his brother Dean, wife Sherry, and son Nick.

Services will be held at the LDS Church in Carlin, NV on August 19, 2017 at 11 a.m
