Local wrestlers enjoy success at state championships

It was a good day for Globe/Miami. Five Miami wrestlers placed in the State Wrestling Championships, according to TrackWrestling

One wrestler from Globe, Seth Durbin, placed third in the 132-pund bracket and Michael Mowrey, from Miami, in 195, placed third. David Pena took fourth in the 120-pound bracket, and his heavier teammates Christopher Shadle and Skyler Guerrero placed sixth in the 170- and 285-pound brackets.

The brackets are set up with a championship bracket to the right and a bracket to the left, which can culminate in third place and below, also called the consolation bracket. There were 46 teams in the D4 division. There were 16 wrestlers in each weight class.

At 106 pounds, John Martinez of Globe pinned his first opponent, Max Foy from Winslow, in his first match. He then lost to Ayala from Arizona Lutheran. Appearing against Rodriguez from Wickenburg in the third-place bracket, he won and went on to beat Pena from Miami on points 7-2 after throwing him down three times.

Martinez himself went down before Jackson Mccall, scoring a takedown and a reversal against Mccall’s takedown in period one, a reversal in period two and a takedown a near fall and a reversal in the third period.

At 120 pounds, David Pena, of Miami, won his first two matches before losing to the eventual state champion, Emilio Ysaguirre from Eloy. A forfeit brought him against Bray for the third place slot. He lost, but he was on the podium in fourth place in the end.

Jacob Gonzalez from Miami, at 113 pounds, lost his first match against Ogle of Santa Cruz Valley and beat Noah Dreher of Bourgade Catholic in the third-place match by pinning him 1:15 into the match. His run ended after battling Dunning to a standstill and then losing by a takedown in overtime.

At 132 pounds, Durbin pinned Logan Sandlin and served up a defeat to Thomas of St. Joseph before falling to the eventual 132-pound winner, Anthony Tinghitella. He went on to beat Aden Cain and James Thomas of Yuma to place third in the tournament.

At 138 pounds, Angel Hernandez from Globe beat Benjamin Meyer from Lavine but lost to the eventual winner of 138, Kaidan Smith and then got pinned by Kaiden Padilla in the third-place bracket.

At 145 pounds, Globe’s Burgett was beaten by Hunter Ogle from Santa Cruz, who eventually placed third at that weight. He then lost to Jared Gorda of Camp Verde.

At 170, Christopher Shadle of Miami pinned Emilio Gobea of Santa Cruz Valley in 42 seconds before losing to Brandon Garcia from Arizona Lutheran. In the third-place bracket, he pinned Gunnar Strassburg and Thayer Nez before being pinned by Brenon Hughes of Odyssey Institute. He went against Seth Solano for fifth place but lost to place sixth.

At 195 pounds, Mowrey of Miami placed third. He won his first match against Raymond Hernandez of River Valley but lost to Kimball Begay of Page, who eventually won first place. He took beat every opponent in the third-place bracket, Taylor from Parker, Hawkins of Pima, Bourland of Northwest Christian and Hernandez of Claypool.

At 220, Romero lost his first match but won his second in the third-place bracket over Arizona College Prep.

At 285, Guerrero won his first match against Shaundiin McCray but was pinned by Dominck Sahar of Northwest Christian. He then pinned Nick Brown of Benson and Christian Brown of Benson. Quenten Mack of Thatcher pinned him, but he won over Cesario Hernandez of Alchesay to take sixth place.
