Globe won 12-2 over Miami in six innings on Thursday, March 7. It was not a walkathon, just Globe’s flat denial of runs to Miami in any inning but the first and the addition to their own collection of runs in every inning but the first.
In that inning, Mackenzie Anthony, pitching for Miami, caught Kayla Howard’s fly for the first out. Globe’s second batter, Hannah Purcella flied out. Then, pitcher Jazlyn Grice earned a base on balls, Brianne Hudson also flied out. So far, as they say, so good for Miami.
At bat for the first time, the Lady Vandals scored two runs. Catcher Cheyenne Lee got on base and scored from Gabriela Cabrera’s double. Shelby Blanco got up to bat and hit a solid home run over the left fence.
In the top of the second Globe answered with two runs of their own. Allison Hudgings and Lexi Muniz walked to first base, Jocelyn Tarango caused a force-out at third and Hope Bear flied out. But with two outs, Zytka Heathman, no. 00 hit a stand-up triple that brought Hudgings and Muniz home, tying the game 2-2.
In the bottom of the second, Globe pitcher Grice struck out three batters.
In the third inning, Globe picked up two more runs. After Purcella flied out to Elizabeth Mathews in center field, Grice hit a home run. Hudson got to first base on an error and was batted in by Muniz for a second run. Score 4-2, Globe. Miami was unable to score in the bottom of the third.
The top of the fourth saw Globe score five runs as Heathman led off with a stand-up double and went to third as Miami threw to first on third swinging strike.
Walks helped to set things up, but base running and a base hit by Muniz brought the score to 9-2.
Miami was unable to score in the bottom of the fourth, although they got on base. In the fifth, Globe scored two runs and in the sixth they scored one to bring the final score to 12-2 Globe.
