Lady Braves lose big to San Manuel in high school softball action

Posted

On the softball field, San Carlos Lady Braves went down 20-0 in a demonstration of why the San Manuel Lady Miners are No. 1 in 2A South.

Starting with pitching. It wasn’t that at 7-13, the San Carlos pitchers were so bad, although the Braves lost runs on pitches that catcher, Kenna Talgo couldn’t stop. It was the good job that San Manuel pitcher did. Braves got on base but never got home.

The San Carlos third baseman did have a lesson for San Manuel: “Don’t pop a fly to third.” She caught every batted ball that came her way. The centerfielder demonstrated how to catch a long fly. But even a low level of fielding errors and a moderate number of wild pitches can be devastating in the face of the Miners’ batting and baserunning.

The top of the first inning set the tone for San Carlos, going three up, three down. San Manuel scored three runs via base hits rather than walk-steal-athons, although one got on the hard way, being hit by a pitch. The Miners went down to a pop fly to third and had two players forced out at second.

For the rest of the game, the pattern was Braves striking out or getting on base and being stranded while San Manuel pitcher and her team piled up the runs.

After facing the Miami Vandals at San Carlos on March 22, the Braves will go to the Chandler Prep Softball Classic at Desert West Park, hosted by Alchesay. Desert West Park is at 67th Avenue and Encanto Boulevard.

Games start at 9 a.m. After that, an away game versus San Miguel (No. 6 in 2A South) on March 26, and a home game against Fort Thomason on Thursday, March 28, should put the Braves on the up side of lopsided scores since they have beaten both schools, San Miguel by a wide margin.
