Lady Braves face challenges in Chandler Prep. New Years Classic

Posted

The Lady Brave basketball team came up against some formidable opponents in the huge Chandler Prep. New Years Classic Jan. 2 through Jan 4. They lost two games, and perhaps they should have won a third since a buzzer buster 3 pointer by Aaliyah Haozous was improperly disallowed in a game which went to Gilbert Christian by one point. The game, though was a nail-biter to the quick from the tip-off to the final buzzer against the 3A team.

The Knights outscored the Braves by one in the first quarter 9-8. At the half, the score was 18-17 in favor of the Braves. The score might have been 21-17 had the opposing coach not talked the ref into changing his mind. But the Braves really went to town in the third quarter with Heaven Cosen putting in 9 points, Courtney Henry, 4 points (a free throw and a three-pointer), and two free throws from Haozous. During that quarter the Knights went ahead by 6, but the Braves caught up, so the score at the beginning of the fourth quarter was 33-30 for the Braves. In the fourth quarter the Braves failed to connect, scoring only 9 points to 13 points for the Knights, making the final score 42-43 for the Knights. One more basket would have won the game, but time ran out. The New Year’s games were good training for the previously unbeaten Braves as they get closer to going to the AIA state tournament.
