Independence Day Celebration to honor passing WWII Veteran

This week, the Cobre Valley community mourns the passing of a living legend, Ysabel Ortega, veteran of the Second World War and resident of Globe-Miami for over sixty years. It was merely a handful of days before his ninety-eighth birthday when Ysabel honored all of the community by riding in the Independence Day parade on July 4 of last year.

Ysabel was a veteran of the Army Air Corp, which was the forerunner to the later separate military branch of the United States Air Force. In 1942 he was drafted and sent to the Pacific, being stationed in Guam and eventually Okinawa. After the war he continued to serve stateside, spending time in Oakland, California in the Military Police. He gave six honorable years of his life to serve his country and fellow citizens before returning to civilian life. It was by chance that he and his wife became local residents, stopping in Miami to visit relatives but deciding to call the Cobre Valley home.

The Cobre Valley Independence Day Celebration committee bids farewell to this local treasure, our very own World War II hero. It was a privilege to celebrate the life of this man in last year’s parade, and it will be our privilege to celebrate his memory hereafter by dedicating the 2019 Independence Day parade in his honor. Americans may be grateful that, though Ysabel Ortega and the rest of his generation has passed into eternity, the liberty they once so bravely defended has not yet perished from the earth.

Help us remember our fellow citizen and honorable serviceman Ysabel Ortega at this year’s Independence Day parade, Thursday, July 4, 2019 in downtown Globe as a curbside spectator or by entering a patriotic float. Parade applications will be available at the Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce. Special thanks to Mario Villegas and Anthony Hernandez of the local VFW, the family of Ysabel Ortega, and Al Nadar of Nadar Automotive for helping to bring Ysabel to last year’s parade.

In memoriam: “O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife, who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life.”
