Humane Society thanks Capstone employees for their generosity

Posted

Dear Editor:

The High Desert Humane Society would like to take this opportunity to thank Capstone’s employees, Capstone and the United Fund for the MOST GENEROUS employee withholdings and company match!  We were pleasantly surprised.

This calendar year to date, we have spent more than $15,000 on vet bills.  Most funds have been expended to care for homeless dogs who were in dire straits and had no other option. Broken legs, torn cruciate ligaments, venereal disease (yes, dogs can get venereal disease!), mange and a myriad of other miserable conditions have been treated at our expense.  These dogs’ only other options were a life of suffering, death or euthanasia. Spay/neuter were the other expenditures.

Not to mention only dogs — in 2016, 218 cats and kittens were taken in by our Cat Rescue and our dedicated volunteers who work there.  Most of the money spent on the Cat Rescue is to spay, neuter and house adult cats until they are adopted. Many kittens are now sent to AAWL, the Valley “no kill” shelter that currently helps us when we have too many.

In helping the High Desert Humane Society, you can all be proud that you have helped us work with Gila County Animal Control to drastically reduce their “kill rate” and find homes or send on to AAWL the adoptable animals they take in. The attitudes and guidelines at our Animal Control have changed greatly with regard to returning pets to their owners and increasing their “live release” rate. We like to think our meetings with county personnel have helped bring about this change.

Your program and the generous participation of Capstone’s employees have kept us solvent enough to continue to do this work. We have great support within our community from our volunteers who man (or woman!) the Thrift Store, Furniture Store, warehouse, dog rescue and cat rescue.

We have made great strides this year with expanding our operation and plan to keep an ambitious schedule in the coming year.

Thank you — all of you!
