The Gila County Historical Museum will host family history workshops throughout the month of May. Kick-off will be at the Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce, located at 1360 N. Broad St. on Thursday, May 16 and 6 p.m.

Historical Museum family history workshops begin May 16

The Gila County Historical Museum will host family history workshops throughout the month of May. Kick-off will be at the Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce, located at 1360 N. Broad St. on Thursday, May 16 and 6 p.m.

An overview of Family History Research; what is needed to get started such as forms, software programs and charts. Tips for recording names, dates and things to consider as you move forward with your research.

How to use Familysearch.org, Friday, May 17 and 1 p.m. and/or 6 p.m. 

Learn how to use the free online genealogy resources available at the FamilySearch website. Presenters will demonstrate the main features of the site, help you register for a free account, and provide individual assistance as you search for your ancestors in FamilySearch. Registrants should come prepared to search by bringing the names of ancestors as well as known or approximate dates and locations lived in. They should also bring an email address r cell phone for use when creating a free FamilySearch account. 

 How to use Ancestry.com, Tuesday, May 21, and 9 a.m.

Historical records and photos hold so many answers about the fascinating people in history. Ancestry.com puts them at your fingertips, enabling research. Ancestry.com lets you access a vast collection of U.S. and international documents online, images of original documents enhance research and critical thinking, includes narratives, oral histories, indexes and abstracts to other resources, you can search over 30,000 Ancestry.com record collections and 11 billion records with a click of a button, record collections span the 1500s–2000s

Newspapers online, Thursday, May 22, 6 p.m.

Old newspapers are not just full of stories about abstract people and events; they are also a valuable genealogical tool that you can use to find information about your ancestors. Newspapers hold a treasure trove of information on your family history. Not only can you find obituaries, but you can often find birth, marriage, and divorce notices; passenger lists; arrests and information on crimes; war heroes and casualties; tragedies and triumphs; historical context, and more. We will explore how to access newspaper through various internet sites.

Wrap up Wednesday, May 29, 6 p.m.

At this time, we will wrap up this segment of workshops by talking about resources that are available at the Gila County Historical Museum. We talk about common mistakes beginners make with genealogy and how to avoid them. We will also review what we have learned and explore what and where we want to go next.
