Posted

The High Desert Tigers almost swept the junior high sectional tournament on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Tigers beat San Carlos 50-13. And the eighth-grade boys from High Desert edged out Miami in a cliffhanger, 33-31.

San Carlos Junior High teams won three trophies for second place against High Desert and Hayden.

If Globe High School can look forward next year to adding the big scorers Mya Way, 26 points and Camryn Longstreet, 10 points, San Carlos can look forward in a couple of years to seventh graders Stephan Ironshell, 11 points and Kenyon Rogers, five points.

The only close game was between the eighth grade Tigers and the eighth-grade boys from Miami.

Globe gained an early 8-point lead in the first quarter and maintained a lead until the second quarter when Vandals Daniel Moat and Andre Hays started eating it away.

Moat hit a 3-pointer to bring the score up from 20-11 to 20-14, and a two for 20-16. Hays hit two baskets to tie the game 20-20. Then he continued his aggressive offense to bring the score to 20-24 in favor of Miami. James Iuya put one in to ease the pain.

But the Vikings scored again, and it was 22-26 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Wensler Nosie, III hit for three to bring the score to 25-26 and Vaugn Lomayaktewa put globe ahead 27-26. Vandal Moat got busy again with 2:58 left in the game. Score 27-28 for Miami.

A free throw by Nosie tied the game again 28-28, and Anthony Landon dropped a 3-point bomb for Miami to put the Vandals three points ahead with a minute left in the game.

The Tigers hit a two to reduce their deficit to one, 30-31, after which, Tiger Laurence Dewey hit for three to put Globe ahead by two, 33-31, which was the final score.

The fans were screaming as much as an NBA crowd when their teams scored, but Globe fans screamed wildest and last.
