Harold and Dorothy Benjamin of Miami celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with family and friends on Saturday, June 10.

Their actual anniversary date is June 7, 1947.

Harold, originally from New Mexico, moved to Miami as a freshman in 1939. He is a WWII veteran, serving as a Navy 3rd class, torpedo man.

Dorothy is a Miami native, spending most of her time living on the same property as past generations. She is also a Miami High School graduate.

After returning home, Harold wanted to finish school, so he became a 1946 graduate. On May 13, 1946, while attending the dance after graduation, he met Dorothy.

A dance turned into a drive home, followed up by a date, and after a few dates Harold knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Dorothy. So he asked for her hand in marriage and he was “honored” by her saying “yes.”

They were married in her mother’s house, with Paul and Norma Dickens being the best man and maid of honor. They remained friends over the years.

Harold worked at Inspiration, starting as a mechanic and eventually becoming a supervisor. Dorothy worked as a telephone operator at Miami Copper.

Together they had three children, Linda, Mike, and Harold; seven grandchildren, Ian, Andrew, Vicky, Cathy, Matthew, Theresa, and Adam; and nine great grandchildren, Aleah, Cael, Jordan, Allison, Layna, Shelby, Bobby, Leim and Riley Belle.

After retirement, the Benjamins traveled with a fifth wheel.

They spent two months in Alaska, vacationed in North Dakota, cruised the Panama Canal and even spent a couple weeks in Chile. They love camping, hunting, and fishing. They are still very active in their church, St. Paul’s Lutheran. Harold was president of the council for four years and sings in the choir.

Dorothy is the sunshine chairman; she has spent years sending cards to people who’ve been ill or in need of prayer.

89-year-old Dorothy can still be found every Tuesday at the Humane Society Boutique and getting her hair done every Friday.

93-year-old Harold is still an active golfer at the country club Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Dorothy said you will always have arguments in a relationship. Some may call them disagreements, but the important thing is try to never go to bed angry. They have had their up and downs, but have came through with flying colors.
