GUSD reaches out to students in need of counseling

Posted

Residents of Globe Miami have always relied on each other for comfort and support during times of grief. Sadly, after suffering a recent loss, area teens are in need of some extra support and guidance. Last week, on the morning of July 11, a young man took his own life, leaving teens and parents with many unanswered questions, looking for help during this period of extreme sadness. The Globe Unified School District is reaching out to students who are need of counseling and encouraging parents to speak to their teens.

Tristan Burns was 16 years old. He excelled in classwork and extracurricular activities. Tristan attended Globe High School, where he played football and was part of the Globe Cheer Team. He also managed the basketball team, played baseball, and was part of the student council. Tristan was a dedicated boy scout and also participated in the Summer Youth Musical Theater Program.

“We celebrate Tristan and all that he added to our school community,” said Globe High School Deputy Superintendent Christa DalMolin. “Tristan will be missed as we would miss any of our students if they were no longer with us.”

The Globe school district is currently offering bereavement support to all of their students and staff. Globe High School has a school counselor and trained therapist and clinicians on site to help with student needs. “Our students will most likely experience a range of emotions as part of the grieving process: emotions may range from sadness to guilt to an inability to sleep,” said DalMolin. “We encourage all students that are struggling to reach out to a counselor, parent, teacher or other trusted adult. We know that asking for help can be difficult but getting help is courageous and healthy. Each student in GUSD is genuinely cared about. We are here to help students during this time.”
