Grant program boosts Globe movie house

Posted

After a year of struggling through the pandemic and its restrictions, one of downtown Globe’s main venues got some welcome news last week.

On August 27, U.S. Representative Tom O’Halleran (AZ-01) announced in a press release that $4.7 million in Shuttered Venue Operators Grants had been awarded to venues in Arizona’s First District.

Among the grant recipients was Hollis Cinemas 4, on Broad Street, which received $415,127. “We hope it’s going to save this theater; it will definitely help,” said owner Bobby Hollis, adding that the theater suffered “tremendous losses” from last year’s shutdowns. He said the grant would help with back rent, utilities paid during the pandemic, mortgages and back salaries. Hollis said the grant wasn’t easy to obtain, but that the Eastern Arizona College Small Business Development Center and its director, Kevin Peck, were a great help in the process.

The Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program was established through the Covid-19 relief package passed in December 2020, to support music and entertainment businesses forced to close down by pandemic restrictions.
