Globe recognizes graduates of first Citizens Academy

At last Tuesday’s Globe City Council meeting, a bit of history was made when graduates of Globe’s very first Citizens Academy received their diplomas. A class of 13 students, eight of whom were able to attend the meeting, spent six weeks learning how the city’s government operates – which could serve as a springboard to greater community involvement.

“We hear your call to action and we will reply,” said one of the graduates, Mary Lowery.

The next Citizens Academy will be held in March 2022 and councilmembers agreed to extend it to seven weeks, in order to include a session on the Globe Public Library, Gila County Historical Museum and Active Adult Center; graduates of the first class were welcomed to return for that session.

Councilmembers also approved a $29,905 contract with Sandoval Elevator Company for repairs to the elevator at the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts. The funding source for the contract remains to be determined.

In other business, Economic and Community Development Director Linda Oddonetto informed the council that BHP Mining had contributed an additional $150,000 to the Community Center pool rehabilitation project.
