Globe Council approves post-flood housing relief, alley activation project

Posted

During their September 14 meeting, the Globe City Council took action to aid flood victims, gave the green light to an “I Art Globe” alley project and approved a program where citizens can learn about different aspects of city government.

Council members voted in favor of a resolution that will allow citizens left without housing by this summer’s floods to stay temporarily in a motorhome, fifth wheel or travel trailer parked on private property while they work to repair their damaged homes.

The council also granted an appeal by “I Art Globe” representative Dr. Thea Wilshire of a denial of a special event permit for the “Alley Cat Alley”

alley activation project, after hearing out the concerns of the police, fire and public works departments as well as Wilshire’s response to those concerns. At one point, Councilman Mike Pastor suggested tabling the matter pending further discussion between “I Art Globe” and city staff; however, in the end the council voted unanimously  to sustain the appeal. The project will have a three-month trial period, starting on its completion.

In addition, the council approved the first class of the City of Globe Citizens Academy program, scheduled to begin October 13. In this six-week program, which will be offered twice a year, 14-20 citizens will have an opportunity to learn how the city government operates. Applications, which are available online at https://www.globeaz.gov/home/news/citizens-academy, should be returned to City Clerk Shelly Salazar. Applicants must live in the city and be 18 or older.
