GHS wrestler Gonzales places first at state; team places eighth

Globe High School Wrestling team traveled to Poston Butte High School in San Tan, Arizona on March 16 and 17 to participate in the AIA Division IV State Wrestling Tournament.

GHS wrestler Gonzales places first at state; team places eighth

Globe High School Wrestling team traveled to Poston Butte High School in San Tan, Arizona on March 16 and 17 to participate in the AIA Division IV State Wrestling Tournament. The team managed to end the tournament eigth overall out of 33 schools.

Congratulations to Sophomore Gabriel Gonzales, who placed first in the 113-pound class, earning 31 team points. He is the third wrestler in the history of Globe High School to be a state champion in his sport. He follows former graduates Chet Huelskamp, who was the first and Riley Cline, who was the second.

Junior John Martinez wrestled in the 126-pound class and placed third, earning 20 team points.

Senior Jacob Gonzales wrestling in the 132-pound class and placed sixth, earning 13 team points.

Senior Christopher “Seth” Durbin wrestled in the 138-pound class and placed second, earning 28 team points.

Senior Jonathan “Johnny” Ortega wrestled in the 195-pound class and placed fifth, earning 13 team points.

Sophomores Anasco Sanchez, Andrew Gonzales and Angel Hernandez also contributed team points from their wins but were eliminated from the tournament after their second losses.

A special “Thank You” to Assistant Coaches John Martinez and Bryce Durbin - they were extremely instrumental in ensuring the kids’ physical conditioning and wrestling drills were met during the season - and to Megan Martinez, who volunteered her time to assist and tutor the kids with their online education needs during the season.
