GCC, GHS partner for College Academy Program

Posted

Gila Community College (GCC) and Globe High School (GHS) have partnered together to create the Globe High School College Academy Program.  Beginning this fall at Globe High School, students can take dual enrollment courses taught by GCC’s masters prepared instructors during the bell schedule.  GCC’s Campus Dean Patricia Burke said, “This collaboration between Gila Community College and Globe High School further underlines the effort to make education a core value in the community. It also gives students a wonderful opportunity to leverage finances in pursuit of their college degree.”

Globe High School Principal Robert Armenta said, “It is a privilege to partner with Gila Community College to provide the students at Globe High School an early college opportunity.  The Globe High School College Academy Program is an innovative way for Globe High School students to earn both a high school diploma and college credits towards the possibility of earning an associate’s degree while they are in high school.  Unlike vocational schools, early college high school programs are focused on getting students on a direct college path, as opposed to training them for an immediate career. As well, early college programs distinguish themselves from college preparatory schools, since students are actually taking college courses, not simply preparing themselves for college. GHS and GCC will make it possible for students who otherwise have few opportunities to continue with higher education. In fact, early college high schools were created primarily for underprivileged students who are first-generation college goers, as well as English language learners or any other students traditionally underrepresented in higher education. The Globe High School College Academy Program is focused on providing a guided track for students who are motivated to go to college or get on with their career, but who do not have the resources at home to help them do that.   This program will complement our CTE/CVIT program which prepares students on a career track prior to high school graduation. My goal is to continue being an innovator and continue to provide our students and community a high school curriculum designed to prepare all students for Career and College Readiness.  I’m indeed very thankful to Gila Community College for partnering with Globe High School to provide our students this opportunity.”

The Globe High School College Academy Program is offering the following courses: General Biology I & II, Intro to Human Anatomy and Physiology, Human Body in Health and Disease, Written Communications I & II, World Literature I & II, Applied Mathematics, Intermediate Algebra, College Math, Elementary Spanish I & II, Intermediate Spanish I & II, History to 1877, and History Since 1865.

GHS has committed to pay the first 6 credit hours for qualified students. Students are responsible to purchase the required textbooks. Contact the high school counseling office at 928-402-6100 for more information.
