The Fort Thomas Apaches powered their way to a 67 to 51 victory over the Duncan Wildcats to win the 1A east championship in their beautiful gym. Under the leadership of Malachi Rogers, Skyler Kindelay, Brad Johnson, Jaden Preston, and Latrell Titla, the Apaches averaged 10 points ahead of Duncan throughout the Game. (The Duncan Wildcats did go ahead very briefly in the very first part of the first quarter.)
Fort Thomas Coach Matthew Dona mentioned switching from zone-defense to man-to-man with soft side help, which did help the Apaches to herd the Cats more effectively by promptly ganging up on them and keeping them from the basket. The Wildcats hung in, not going behind by double digits until the last seconds of the third quarter, but they averaged 18.7 points behind in the fourth quarter and finished 16 points behind Fort Thomas.
In addition to his 11 field goals including 3 three-pointers, Malachai Rogers #10, hit all six of his free throw opportunities for a total of 25 points. Senior, Skyler Kindelay scored six times with one for 3 points, and sunk three of his free throws for a total of 16 points. Senior, Brad Johnson sunk three baskets and a couple of free throws, scoring 8 points. Sophomore Cameron Anderson, put in two baskets for 4 points. Senior, Jaden Preston scored six points on three field goals and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Big man Latrell Titla put in only 2 field goals but hit 4 of six free throws.
Titla is also credited with 9 rebounds, three blocks, two turnovers and an assist. The team will be off to the state 1A championships in Prescott Feb. 20-22.
