Emergency personnel respond to early morning accident

On Jan. 5 at 1:12 a.m. Globe Police and emergency medical personnel from the Globe and Tri-City Fire Departments were dispatched to the intersection of Ash Street and Hill Street in reference to a two-vehicle traffic collision with serious injuries.

Officers arrived on scene and found that an eastbound Nissan passenger car collided head-on with a westbound semi-truck and trailer on Ash Street just east of Hill Street. The Nissan crossed left of center through the intersection and entered the westbound fast lane. The semi-truck was travelling in the westbound fast lane, approaching the intersection.

The Nissan driver  was identified as Candise Marie Plant, a 28-year-old woman from Globe. Plant sustained very serious injuries and was transported to the Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.

A passenger in the car was identified as James W. Mitchell, a 55-year-old man from Globe.  Mitchell sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a level-one trauma center in the valley. Mitchell was listed as in critical condition but has been upgraded to critical but stable condition.

The driver of the semi-truck tractor was identified as Bobby D. Mitchell of Payson. Bobby Mitchell sustained minor injuries and he was treated and released from the Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center on the night of the incident. Gila County Sheriff’s deputies also assisted with the investigation.

James Mitchell and Bobby Mitchell are not related.
