Those who attend all of Dietitian Tamara Scott’s “Eat healthy Be Active workshops will get more than a neat way to carry a salad to lunch without withering the salad with the dressing. (One puts the dressing in a little container tucked inside a larger vessel so that you can pour it on and shake it into the salad.) They will get priceless advice on how to eat healthy without turning over their whole pay checks to the super-market.
Scott, a dietitian at San Carlos Apache Health Care’s uses materials from the United States Department of Agriculture to systemize the process of shopping and cooking healthy on a budget. Her classes are sized to fit around a conference table and individualized for the participants.
Hands on activities like looking through the newspaper ads for items on sale that one might get a lot of while on sale and use later, or stuff that one might use that week.
This depends on a rough weekly meal plan, an example of which she provides as part of the handout for the class.
Another good tip is to look at the per/ounce cost of foods. Sometimes the larger cup of Yogurt, for instance, may cost more for the cup but actually cost less per ounce and be the better deal. (Sometimes-the cleaver so-in-so’s- that run the stores will sell the smaller cup at a lower price per ounce.) But one should look for that price per ounce when it appears on the shelf label.
In December, classes will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8:45 to 10:30 a.m. in a conference room at the hospital. The class cycle so if you have missed one, you can pick it up later.
