Armida Dixon, director of nursing at Heritage Health Care Center in Globe, was named Director of Nursing of the Year for Life Care Centers of America’s Southwest Division on Monday, April 9.
The award was given during Life Care’s annual Directors of Nursing Meeting held at the company’s headquarters in Cleveland, Tennessee. It is given to the director of nursing in each of Life Care’s divisions who best demonstrates outstanding qualities in several areas, including customer service ratings, staff development and successful state surveys.
“The daily care and concern she has for our residents allows them to maintain the highest level of dignity and self-respect,” said Tim Summerhays, executive director.
During the ceremony, Dixon was praised for leading the facility to outstanding state survey outcomes, as well as enabling it to maintain a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and place on U.S. News & World Report’s 2017-2018 Best Nursing Homes list.
Dixon, who is fluent in Spanish as well as English, helps translate for residents who need help expressing their thoughts and feelings. She is involved in the community with mentoring nurses and helping coordinate facility-sponsored events, and she pays attention to the community’s needs. For example, she noticed that many physicians seemed particularly concerned about wound care. As a result, she started a campaign to have as many certified wound nurses as possible. To date, eight nurses at Heritage Health Care Center have received the training and are certified wound nurses.
Dixon was selected from all the directors of nursing in Life Care’s Southwest Division, which encompasses 23 facilities in Arizona, California and Nevada.
“Armida is a living example of what the honorable nursing profession is all about,” said Beecher Hunter, Life Care president. “She administers her God-given talents in a spirit of love and compassion to help make the lives of others better. We’re proud of her and all of our nursing award winners.”
Heritage Health Care Center, located at 1300 South St., is one of 10 skilled nursing and rehab facilities in Arizona managed by Life Care Centers of America.
