Sheriff J. Adam Shepherd would like to release the following updated information regarding the investigation and arrest of a Gila County Sheriff’s Detention Officer.
On Oct. 28, Gila County Sheriff’s Detention Officer Saban Mata was pulled over by detectives with the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Gila County Drug, Gang and Violent Crimes Task Force as Officer Mata was traveling to work. During the stop it was discovered Officer Mata was driving on a suspended Arizona Driver’s license. Further investigation by detectives showed Officer Mata was in possession of a Narcotic Drug.
Officer Mata was placed on administrative leave and as a result of the investigation and the charges for possession and use of a narcotic drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and promoting prison contraband were forwarded to the Gila County Attorney’s Office.
Saban Mata was arrested and booked into the Gila County Jail on the charges for possession of a narcotic drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and promoting prison contraband.
As a result of the arrested and charges, the Gila County Sheriff’s Office has initiated the termination of employment for Mata on Nov. 12.
Sheriff J. Adam Shepherd said “We are placed in a position of trust and we will not tolerate this type of behavior. We are dedicated to our aggressive fight against drugs that continue to plague our communities and kids.”
