Copper Basin Coalition continues working behind the scenes

Posted

Are you concerned about substance abuse and underage drinking in the Globe/Miami area? Did you know there is a community coalition that has been working to bring knowledge and efforts to lower the number of youths using substance and drinking underage? The Copper Basin Coalition has been in existence since 2006. Members of the Copper Basin Coalition work with community members and other agencies to promote the health and well-being of southern Gila County. The Coalition has sponsored (and will continue to sponsor) several community events such as the Read on Express, Dump the Drugs days twice a year, Rock the Block, National Night Out and Teen Pathways (maze). The Read on Express has been an event sponsored by the Copper Basin Coalition since its inception five years ago. Mrs. Sharon Listiak has been the Chairperson and the ‘face’ of the Read on Express. She has done a great job of chairing this committee. Sharon has recently resigned from this position. We wish her success in her future endeavors and thank her for her years of service. The coalition also offers training to the community about Prescription Drug Use/Abuse, Underage Drinking, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), Marijuana and other drug use/abuse, Trauma Informed Care. In order to comply with CDC recommendations regarding the COVID 19 outbreak and those of the State of Arizona and local cities regular monthly meetings have been held virtually through zoom so that planning of events and presentations can continue. The coalition has sponsored several virtual trainings and will continue to offer trainings in this format until we are able to convene in person once again. The Coalition is currently working on plans to hold the following annual events with a safer physical distancing guideline: National Night Out Oct. 6, Dump the Drugs Oct. 24, Read on Express Dec. 12 Hosting of these events will depend on current CDC and local government guidelines. Please check out the Copper Basin Coalition on Facebook for meeting dates and times as well as training information.
