GILA COUNTY - Chair Martin and members Humphrey and Cline,
The Arizona State Board on Geographic and Historic Names will be considering a name change application for US 60 that is central to this community at a hearing on September 25.
The State Board will have before it a proposal to change the highways name from Jefferson Davis Highway and designate it as the Governor Rose Mofford Highway.
The proposed name would memorialize Rose Mofford’s unique place in Arizona History as the Globe native who became the first woman to serve as Governor of the State of Arizona. She served as Governor from April 4, 1988 to March 6, 1991. Combined with her other official responsibilities she worked a total of 50 years in service to the public.
Rose Mofford, who frequently traveled on US 60 between her beloved hometown of Globe and Phoenix, clearly is a name that, more than any other name, is most historically relevant and appropriate for US 60.
I urge the Gila County Board of Supervisors to direct staff to prepare and submit to the Arizona State Board of Geographic and Historic Names, a statement supporting naming US 60 as the Governor Rose Mofford Memorial Highway.
The statement should be communicated to Mr. Ryan Ehrfurth, the State Board’s support staff. His email address is [email protected] His postal mail address is: Mr. Ryan Ehrfurth, Arizona State Library, 1901 W. Madison Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85009.
Thank you for any official and/or personal endorsement you and other residents of Gila County submit in recognition of the historic and pioneering role played by Gila Countys own Rose Mofford.
The Governor Rose Mofford Memorial Highway…has a great sound to it! With your support it will happen!
Thank you, Roberto A. Reveles
