Chandler Prep runs past Miami Vandals 26-16

The Chandler Prep Titans defeated the Miami Vandals 26-16 Friday, Oct. 27, 2019 at Miami High School.

Vandal team captains for the game included: junior #72 Skyler Guerrero, senior #8 Jaden Goss, senior #44 Brian Goss, and junior #11 Ryan Powell. Chandler won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff.

After the kickoff Chandler Prep started their first possession from their 40 yard line.

The Titans marched 60 yards in eight plays to score on a 16 yard touchdown run with 6:38 to go in the opening quarter. With the extra point, Chandler Prep led 7-0.

Miami’s first possession began at their 20 yard line, after the Titan kicker sent the kickoff out of the back of the end zone. The Vandals went three and out, quick kicking the ball to the Titan 31 yard line.

The Titans advanced the ball to their 40 yard line, where they punted on fourth and 13, to the Vandal 22 yard line.

On first down, Miami sophomore running back #21 Justin Cook gained 10 yards to the 32. However, the Vandals drew a block in the back penalty on the following play to move the ball back to their 23 as the first quarter ended.

Two plays into the second quarter, the Vandals fumbled and ball was recovered by the Titans at the Miami 30.

The Titans went 30 yards in five plays to score on a 15 yard touchdown run with 8:20 to play in the first half. The extra point made the score Titans 14, Vandals 0.

Chandler Prep was driving to score again, when on first and 10 from the Vandal 15, the Titan quarterback attempted to complete a pass in the end zone. However, sophomore #1 Brayden Scott intercepted the ball in  the end zone, to give the Vandals the ball at their 20 yard line.

With :56 seconds left in the first half, Powell completed a 27 yard touchdown pass to Brian Goss to get the Vandals on the scoreboard. Powell ran in the two-point conversion to cut the Titans lead to 14-8 at the half.

On the last play of the third quarter, the Chandler Prep scored on a 38 yard touchdown. After missing the extra point, the Titans led 20-8.

The Vandals turned the ball over on downs on their next possession, giving the Titans the ball at the Miami 25. Chandler Prep advanced the ball inside the Miami 10 yard line to set up a first and goal at the nine. Two plays later the Titans were at the Vandal four yard line, when an illegal motion penalty  and an incomplete pass brought up a fourth and goal at the nine. The Titans kicked a 21 yard field goal with 6:49 to play in the game to make the score Chandler Prep 23, Miami 8.

The Titans added a 26 yard field goal with 3:43 to go to advance the score to Chandler Prep 26, Miami 8.

With 2:48 left to play, Cook sprinted 23 yards for a Vandal touchdown. Senior #9 Tanner Peery ran in the two-point conversion to set the final score at Chandler Prep 26, Miami 16.

The Vandals travel to Tempe Prep Friday, Oct. 4 with the kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
