Braves face off against Vandals in boys and girls hoops, take turns dominating opponents

The varsity games between Miami and San Carlos were a tale of two landslides.

After two wins against San Miguel and Desert Christian, the Miami boys were able to dominate San Carlos 58-29, all the more so since San Carlos, with a record of 3-12, was playing without one of its main scorers, Lewis Ironshell.

Freshman Kaden Phillips, led in points with 13, including three 3-pointers. Reppert Cassadore scored five points, and almost all of the team put in at least one basket.

If the Braves were the underdogs, their fate was a mirror image of the situation of the Lady Braves, the number one team in 2A south, having lost only twice in tournament play, and not once in the regular season.

Facing them, the fifth place Lady Vandals were severely challenged, with a final score 86-12.

At the end of the first quarter, Jessica Garcia scored Miami’s first basket, to make the score 45-2.

After the ferocious San Carlos attacks of the first quarter, Miami was able to score more baskets.

Mackenzie Anthony hit a free throw, and later on Jasenia Quezada hit for two. Jessica Garcia scored again, and Estrella Salazar made their eighth point.

In the third quarter, the Braves shut the Lady Vandals out, but Quezada and Anthony were each able to score two in the fourth.

For the Braves, the point leader was No. 10 Beyonce Cutter, who scored 34 points.

Cutter shot 67 percent. Losing the ball to her was very often to lose two or three points. And Cutter was the go-to person for three pointers, making six of eight attempts. Aaliyah Haozous contributed 19 points. Alyssa Martin made 15.

On Friday, Feb. 1, San Carlos will have a rematch with Globe, and the Lady Braves will have enough to put up with in that game. It will be a game to scream for joy or groan in anguish, or both.

Lady Brave Celesta Cassa shoots from the paint.

Mario Pierce shoots in the Miami boys win.

Reppert Cassadore shoots a basket in a losing effort.

Lady Vandals wrap up season after loss

On Friday, the Lady Vandals lost 56-27 to Desert Christian. Jasenia Quezada led Miami with 15 points and added six steals. Shelby Blanco added three points, five rebounds and two blocks. Jalen Pike scored six points while Jessica Garcia registered six steals.

Miami finishes its season Friday at 5:30 p.m. at San Manuel.
