Boy Scout Troop 101 goes to Philmont Scout Ranch

Posted

Recently 10 members of Boy Scout Troop 101, sponsored by Globe-Miami Elks Lodge 489, traveled to Philmont Scout Ranch in northern New Mexico. The group spent 10 days backpacking from camp to camp on the ranch. The Scouts covered over 70 miles during their time on the trail. Each day found the crew at a different staffed camp, which offered a variety of activities for the Scouts. Some were based on themes of the mid- to late 1800’s such as a logging camp and an 1870’s homestead. More modern activities included 3-D archery and fly fishing.

Philmont Scout Ranch is owned and operated by the National Boy Scouts of America and is considered the finest High Adventure Camp in the country. It is easily the largest youth camp in the world. It covers over 140,000 acres of the southern tip of the Rocky Mountains, known as the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, near Cimarron. Each summer approximately 22,000 Scouts from across the country and around the world experience Philmont’s over 300 miles of trails.

Due to the popularity of the camp, Troop 101 had to make their reservations to attend almost two years prior to actually going this summer.

Youth Troop members that made the trip were Crew Leader James Keel, Isaac Moya, Doug Harris, Larenz Combs, Noah Combs, Colin Bronson, Preston Quintana and Chris Starling. Advisors for the trip were Tom Bronson and Manny Quintana.
