Beautifying the Old Globe Cemetery

Posted

Gila County District 3 Supervisor Woody Cline and City of Globe Vice Mayor Mike Stapleton have a vision to beautify the Old Globe Cemetery. “There’s a lot of great history in that cemetery,” said Cline. “There’s a number of military graves along with the final resting place of many families that helped to build Globe.”

Cline and Stapleton organized a clean-up in February of this year and followed up with another in March. In February, the group of volunteers removed literally tons of cactus and mesquite from a large area. Other clean-ups have been on hold due to Covid-19, and of course the weather has been extremely hot this year and not favorable to additional clean-ups.

Our cities and towns have had to cut back over the years and keeping large areas like the old cemetery in shape is really a challenge. The area is large and not easy to maintain. Much of it is in rocky and hilly terrain, making it almost impossible to bring in machinery to assist city workers.

Cline is contributing $2,500 to the city to establish a Cemetery Clean-Up and Improvement Fund.  He and Stapleton hope that other people will want to donate to the fund and the donations can be used to complete some of the projects they have identified. They are also hoping that citizens and groups may want to volunteer for future clean-up events.

The County and the City will enter into an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) that will get the fund established and the project started.
