Area municipal clerks honored

Globe and Miami recently honored their municipal clerks in celebration of a week designated just for them.

After the proclamation was read at its May 14 regular meeting, the Globe City Council honored City Clerk Shelly Salazar, presenting her with the proclamation as well as a flowering plant.

For its part, the Miami Town Council unanimously approved the proclamation at its April 22 regular meeting, honoring Town Clerk Karen Norris.

The proclamation calls the office of municipal clerk “a time honored and vital part of local governments” that exists throughout the world.

The oldest among public servants, the office of municipal clerk provides the professional link between citizens, local governing bodies and government agencies at other levels.

Municipal clerks pledge to be “ever mindful of their neutrality and impartiality, rendering equal service to all,” the proclamation states.

It further recognizes municipal clerks for “the vital services they perform and their exemplary dedication to the communities they represent.”

Held May 5-11, Municipal Clerks Week this year celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Norris has been Miami Town Clerk for eight years. Prior to that, she was a municipal clerk elsewhere for eight years, she told the Silver Belt.

A City of Globe employee for 18 years, Salazar became its city clerk in November of 2013.

Salazar completed her CMC (Certified Municipal Clerk) certification in 2016 and is currently working towards her MMC (Master Municipal Clerk) certification, she told the Silver Belt.
