Alan David Castaneda-Lundy

Posted

Alan David Castaneda-Lundy, a native of Miami/Claypool, passed from this world at his home in Globe on Feb. 7, 2019, surrounded by his family.

Alan was born in Miami, Ariz., on March 9, 1963, to Robert and Betty (Moreno) Castaneda. He graduated from Miami High School in 1981 and went out into the world to make his mark. Alan met and married Christie Cothrun in 1983, and their son Kevin Cothrun-Castaneda was born in 1989. Though the marriage ended in 1991, Christie and Alan (later joined by Bill) together raised an intelligent, thoughtful and loving young man.

In addition to Claypool and Globe, Alan lived in various cities in Arizona, California and Colorado, but he felt most at home in San Francisco, Calif., a city he had fallen in love with when he was very young. Alan moved to San Francisco in June 1995 and, after just a few months, was joined by the love of his life, Bill Lundy-Castaneda (married on July 5, 2013), having met in Phoenix just prior to his move to San Francisco. For the next 20 years, Alan and Bill lived in the Bay Area and enjoyed travel, friendship, food and pets and often mixed them one with the other. And there was always family, both Alan’s and Bill’s, with whom they sometimes traveled and often visited. They went on cruises with Bill’s family; traveled to Mexico and Europe with Alan’s family; and traveled to New York City, New England and the Pacific states with their friends. Adventures with family and friends were Alan’s favorite pastime. Alan was even blessed with international travel through his long-time employer Genentech, through which he traveled to Singapore, Mexico and Ireland.

Alan was blessed with a musical gift. He loved good music, had the voice of an angel and played the most soothing guitar. He often shared this gift with the world and passed this love of music on to his son. Alan had a terrific sense of humor and shared it unreservedly, but never with mean spirit. He was always there with a smile and a good word for anyone he met.

Alan had many health challenges in his life, among them losing most of his central vision in 2009 and then a brain tumor diagnosis in 2016. Despite these challenges, Alan was able to maintain good spirits and share those good spirits with his family and friends. Alan and Bill moved to Globe to be close to family in 2017.

Alan was finally robbed of his life by brain cancer on Feb. 7, 2019. Alan was predeceased by his mother, Betty Castaneda, and his brother Robert “Rocky” Castaneda and is survived by his husband Bill Lundy-Castaneda; son Kevin Cothrun-Castaneda (Lorena); father Robert Castaneda; brothers Michael Castaneda (Vicky) and Thomas Castaneda (RoseAnn) and Charlie Castaneda; sisters Christine Grigg (Hubert) and Rosemary Horlacher (Don); ex-wife and good friend Christie Cothrun; and many nieces and nephews and their many children. Alan found much joy and companionship in his pets and is survived by his faithful dogs L.V., Bosco and Dudley and his gregarious cats Linus and Lucy.

The family would like to thank the nurses, aides and staff at THEMA Health Services for their assistance in caring for Alan these last few weeks, especially Deanna, Jennifer, Charlene and Kylie. We would also like to thank Karen Casillas for her help during this difficult time.

We will be having a Celebration of Alan’s Life on March 9, 2019 at 2 p.m. at the Globe Elks Lodge.

Assisting the family; Lamont Mortuary of Globe.
