50-plus participants show up for clean-up

Over 50 individuals arrived for a major clean-up on Saturday, March 18, according to Regina Ortega-Leonardi of the Cathy Sanchez-Cañez Memorial Fund. Capstone Mining provided dumpsters, and the Forest Service provided a dumpster and a trailer to sort metal objects before transporting them to the dump. Jackie Joe Aneas worked with his own front loader to move large pieces of granite waste that had been blocking access to Forest Trail 200. One tenth of a mile away, he deposited them to form a barrier to vehicular access to another foot trail. A contingent from Globe High School showed up, as did Mayor Al Gameros and Michelle Yerkovich from the City of Globe.

At Connie’s Bridge new Globe citizens and longtime prospectors Terry and Doug Sugart pitched in as they had in other recent clean-ups. Others worked to clear two years of squatter debris from a camp in Ice House Canyon. The stuff was right on Pinal Creek and would have been washed down in any significant flood. Sites like this on local washes are of significant interest to the Cathy Sanchez-Cañez Memorial Fund since Sanchez-Cañez was caught and drowned in just such a debris-filled flood. The Cobre Valley Watershed Partnership also participated. Volunteers worked to clean up China Camp, a messy shooting area at the head of Six Shooter Canyon.

Another large cleanup is scheduled for April 17 in honor of Earth Day, which occurs on April 22. The City of Globe will make three large dumpsters available free to the public at various locations. Call Michelle Yerkovich 928-961-0117 or Regina Ortega-Leonardi at 808-373-0032 for details.
